These adorable pin cushions were designed by Betz White, and featured on Martha Stewart TV Show some time back. We had to get our share of these super duper cuties and share it all with you.
She presents these felted fuzzie projects well. She has also done scrumptious cupcakes, cute pillows and many other things from cast away felt. I love how well she photographs them.
If you like to get yourself a more elaborate guide and more felting projects like our Tea Cups here, you might enjoy Betz White's books. For sure, you'll enjoy creating beautiful repurposed felted things for everybody in your gifts list - pets, children, aunties, Mamma, girlfriends...
What You'll Need Apart from Our Free Pin Cushion Patterns:
√ Wool sweaters that you you'll be felting (washing machine, soap, detergent)
√ Scissors, needle, thread, pins
√ Fabric glue
√ I-cord. To make the I-cord you need: two doubble-pointed knitting needles and yarn that can be felted. Like fingering weight wool yarn. You'll find a video instruction for making an I-cord below.
√ White felt (also craft felt's great) for making the "cream". (Well, no-one really says that your toppings must be white. As you can see in the photo above, we went ahead and made it colorful.)
The Making:
Felt the sweaters by washing them in hot soapy water in washing machine. First, cut off the sleeves and open them up as well to avoid creases. Remember, your sweater must be at least 90% woolen to get felted. You know the fabric's felted if it doesn't fray.
NOTE: To view the printables on this page, you will need Adobe Reader installed on your computer (the latest version is recommended). You can get your free Adobe Reader here (a new window will open so you can download without leaving this page).
Then start with making the DRINK (tea). Get your free pin cushion patterns out and cut the rectangles in two different colors. One by one, fold them lengthwise and pin to secure. Place one on top of the other, offsetting the top one by 1/2" (1,7 cm), roll up. Secure the roll with pins and cut off the excess fabric. Then finish with a few hand-stiches. The folded edge of the roll will be the top. Trim unfolded edge of the roll with scissors rounding it slightly like the base of a teacup. The roll should be about 2" (5 cm.).
Cut the CUP from a different colored fabric. Fold right sides together widthwise. Then sew these short ends together with a 1/4" (0,6 cm.) seam allowance thus forming a tube. Then slide the tube 1/2" (1,7 cm.) down over top of the "tea" roll. Carefully turn the tube right side out. Secure the rim of the cup to the tea with fabric glue. Trim bottom of the cup if it's too much longer than the tea roll. Then make a running stitch around the bottom of the tube. Pull the thread to gather the bottom of the cup as shown in the photo.
Knit about one yard (0,9 cm.) unfelted I-cord. Use yarn meant for felting. Like fingering weight wool yarn. Then felt your I-cord in a lingerie in hot soapy water in washing machine.
To make the cup's FOOT, glue a 2" (5 cm.) piece of I-cord end to end, forming a circle. Then glue the circle to the bottom of the cup; pin in place.
Then make the cup's EAR. Fold a 10" (25,4 cm.) length of I-cord in half lengthwise and sew together down the middle with a zigzag stitch. Sew a small roll at one end of the ear. Glue the ear to cup and secure with pins.
Then, to complete the SAUCER, glue 12" (30,5 cm) I-cord around the saucer's circle. Glue the saucer to the bottom of the cup.
Last, remember to adorn the drink with WHIPPED CREAM DOLLOP. Cut three (white) felt circles. Fold one by one like tacos. Adjoin with some hand-stiches like seen in the photo. Attach to top of the tea with a pin.
And, there, you've successfully followed our free pin cushion patterns.
